Since its formation in 2005, the company has been profitable year on year and is on a significant growth trajectory. Also, Mahatransco has consistently excelled in performance in terms of Regulatory Standards.
The increasing demand for electricity is leading to rapid expansion in Generation capacity in Maharashtra. Therefore a reliable power transmission infrastructure needs to be created in order to cater to the growing demand of electricity. We have accepted this challenge and are significantly investing in infrastructure, equipments and processes of the Company.
Mahatransco: An Overview
As on March 31, 2010 we own and operate a vast transmission network of 37133 CKm. of electrical transmission lines, 520 EHV substations with 73791 MVA transformation capacity at 6 EHV levels from 66 KV to 400 KV. This infrastructure consists of inter-regional as well as intra regional electric power transmission system in Maharashtra State and carries electric power across the same. Our transmission system is capable of handling about 15000 MW of power as of today and the company has transmitted 97189 MUs of electricity in the year 2009-10.
The transmission system availability for EHV AC system is 99.41% for 2009-10 as compared to 99.29 % in the previous year. The company also has the distinction of the only power transmission utility in the state sector to own a HVDC line of 750 km from Chandrapur to Padghe in Maharashtra. Hence the company is playing a pivotal role in the power sector of the state and also the entire country.
At the end of 2008-09, Mahatransco’s gross asset base was Rs.104.45 billion. The company made a net profit of Rs.1.38 billion in 2008-09. Its total revenue increased to Rs.19.31 billion in 2008-09 from Rs.16.53 billion in 2007-08.
Towards becoming the best in class Transmission Utility:
Mahatransco has a planned capex of Rs. 112.64 billion during the eleventh plan to add capacity capable of handling about 30,000 MW of demand. To achieve this ambitious target, we have pioneered several innovative measures including a strategic alliance model for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts and Public Private Partnerships (PPPs). Mahatransco has joined hands with Jindal South West Energy Ltd. to form a joint venture (JV) company called Jaigad Power Transco for the construction of transmission lines to evacuate power from the 1,200 MW Jaigad project in Ratnagiri District.
To meet the increase in power generation in the next few years, Mahatransco has also planned to establish a robust Transmission network with Transmission capacity of 30,000MW by 2012. A total transmission system of 610 sub-stations, 45000 Ckt Km. lines and transformation capacity of 108788 MVA is envisaged by the end of 2012.
Mahatransco is implementing Availability Based Tariff (ABT) metering at 480 locations by installing about 9,090 meters in the system. The ABT metering data is made available online at our load despatch centre at Kalwa through the communication network. Further, we are implementing substation monitoring system at 25 important substations, numerical relays with disturbance recorders, event sequence recorders and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) with global positioning systems (GPS). All old electromechanical- type distance protection relays on EHV lines are being replaced by numerical relays. Further, advanced fire protection system has been adopted at all 400 KV and key 220 KV grid substations.
Enterprise Resource Planning and Management Information System(ERP-MIS) are also under implementation. IBM is establishing the systems and it will be put into operation shortly.
Mahatransco has also planned to establish 765 KV stations at Koradi and Akola with associated 765 KV transmission lines by 2012-13 for evacuation of power from the Koradi and Adani generation projects. We are looking to get support from organisations like Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. and private investors in this regard.
This is a challenging and critical period for Mahatransco. I am confident that Mahatransco will not only live up to the challenges but also establish itself as one of the best performing State Transmission Utilities in the country.
In order to improve the performance of employees by providing appropriate technical and management training, MSETCL has established 7 regional training centres i.e. at Chandrapur, Padghe, Jejuri, Kolhapur, Aurangabad, Nashik and Amravati, one in each zone. Also, a state of Art training centre is being established at Lonavala. Further, MSETCL has adopted five Industrial Training Institutes such as Kuhi (Nagpur), Surgana (Nashik), Sillod (Aurangabad), Kavthe Mahankal (Karad) and Bhiwandi (Vashi) under the sponsorship of the Govt.of India to create more skilled manpower in the field of Power.
I want to convey my sincere appreciation for the hard work put in by every employee, past and present, for creating and strengthening this organization. In 2009-10, we addressed many crucial issues, made great progress and have built a foundation to capitalize on the many opportunities ahead. We are moving forward with purpose and momentum. My best wishes on this happy occasion.
